A BRIEF HISTORY OF LONDON CITY AIRPORT
- 1981 London Docklands Development Corporation undertakes
study on the feasibility of a STOLport (Short Take Off and Landing)
city centre gateway in Docklands.
- 1982 Dash 7 aircraft lands at Heron Quay, original site
of the proposed airport on the Isle of Dogs. Residents of the London
Borough of Newham vote two to one in favour of the new airport.
- Mowlem submits application for planning permission.
- 1983 Mowlem reaches agreement with the Port of London
Authority to lease land in the Royal Docks. Public Inquiry begins.
- 1986 Detailed planning consent obtained. Work begins. The
Prince of Wales lays foundation stone of the terminal building.
- 1987 October: commercial flights start at London City Airport.
- November: official opening by the Queen.
- 1988 Successful demonstration flight by BAe 146. Poll shows
83% of local residents in favour of the aircraft being allowed to
fly from London City.
- 1989 Airport submits planning application to extend the
runway, allowing the airport to serve more distant destinations
with a broader range of aircraft.
- 1991 Secretary of State Michael Heseltine approves London
City's expansion plans.
- 1992 The Princess of Wales visits London City to commemorate
the official relaunch of the airport and its extended runway.
- March: BAe 146 jet flights begin.
- 1993 Over 245,000 passengers use London City. May: Limehouse
Link road opens.
- 1994 Passenger numbers rise to almost 480,000, an increase
of 96% over '93.
- 1995 London City offers flights to 12 European cities by
nine airlines.
- First ticketless air travel in the UK.
- 30 October: London City Airport Ltd is sold to Irish
businessman Dermot Desmond.
- Passenger numbers pass the half-million mark - 555,946.
- 1996
- January: appointment of new Chairman, Ray MacSharry.
New destinations Düsseldorf Mönchengladbach, Amsterdam,
Edinburgh, Stockholm and Malmö begin.
- London City Airport wins two industry Awards, Executive Travel
Best Regional Airport (UK) and Business Travel World UK Business
Airport Award.
- Richard Gooding announced as new Managing Director.
- Passenger total: 727,601
- 1997 Business lounge with EBN/internet opens.
- June: London City wins Silver Award for Best Regional
Airport (UK).
- Planning approval granted to increase movements at weekends.
- July is best month ever (113,738). July also sees the
one-millionth passenger in a twelve-month period.
- September: Birthday party for 4,000 local residents;
new destination - Manchester.
- October: new destinations are Strasbourg, and Milan-Linate;
new airlines Alitalia and Lufthansa Cityline.
- Sabena overnights a plane at London City - a first scheduled
night-stop.
- London City celebrates its 10th Anniversary with two souvenir
publications.
- Departure Lounge redesigned and refurbished amalgamating international
and domestic lounges and incorporating new retail outlets.
- Passenger total: 1,165,318, a 60% increase over 1996.
- 1998
- January is a record first month.
- March is best month ever with 116,136 passengers.
- London City wins UK Business Airport of the Year Award from
Institute of Transport Management.
- New departure lounge opened by Nick Raynsford MP, Minister
for London.
- June: Planning consent received to double number of
flights per year to 73,000; government announces dedicated Docklands
Light Railway station for the airport by 2003.
- August: Charity open day for more than 8,000 guests.
- October: New routes to Basel, Glasgow and Luxembourg.
- November: All-time record month with 125,585 passengers,
and 'best week' of the year (23-30th) with more than 30,400
passengers.
- Annual passenger total is: 1,358,317.
- 1999
- January: Airport named Most Preferred UK Airport by
the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland.
- March: new route announced (Dundee) with new airline
Suckling Airways who also takes over Glasgow route from start
of summer schedule. Crossair overnights its early Zürich
flight.
- April: Airport wins Queen's Award for Industry - Export
Achievement, the only airport to have done so.
- June 1999 was best ever month with 127,665 passengers.
- July: Jersey European is welcomed on the Dublin route.
Charity fun-day welcomes 9,500 visitors.
- September: One-millionth passenger in 1999 welcomed.
London City becomes the first airport in the UK to offer on-line
booking.
- October: The newly refurbished business centre opens.
- November sees the arrival of British Regional Airlines
to Sheffield, Aer Lingus to Dublin and Air France to Rennes
and Le Havre. The long awaited opening of the Jubilee Line happens,
bringing central London even closer.
- December: Gandalf Airlines takes over the route to
Milan.
- Annual passenger total is: 1,388,481.
- 2000
- March: Flights to Belfast & the Isle of Man commence,
with British European. Real time flight information becomes
available on-line. Government announces £30m funding for
DLR link to the airport. Team Lufthansa partner airline, Augsburg
Airways launched route to Munster.
- May: Hertz is announced as the airport's third car
hire operator. The newly refurbished restaurants open.
- June: Full on-line booking becomes available. Jersey
flights commence with British European.
- August: Air France launches the destinations of Clermont-Ferrand
and Bordeaux. The one-millionth passenger of the year is welcomed
earlier than ever before - 28th August.
- September: The airport is voted 'Best City Airport'
worldwide by airlines attending the annual 'Routes' conference.
- November: The airport's WAP based flight information
goes live. Aberdeen is the latest route, with British European.
A planning application is submitted, seeking to increase the
number of aircraft parking stands and runway capacity.
- December: Annual passenger total for 2000 proving the
best yet, as 1,580,234 passengers used the airport. Individual
monthly records had also been set in March, June, July, August,
September and October.
