Vitoria Airport
About Vitoria
The town of Vitoria (Gasteiz, to the Basques),
in the south of the region, is the capital of the Basque Country.
It has an old quarter, a string of attractive museums (including
one dedicated to playing cards) and is famous for its spectacular
Festival of the White Virgin (Fiesta de la Firgen Blanca) in August.
About Vitoria Airport
Vitoria airport is eight kilometres from the city,
in the district of Foronda, handles an outstanding volume of cargo
traffic. During 2005, it was the fourth largest Spanish airport,
after Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona and Gran Canaria, in terms of
cargo volume.
The Vitoria airport has undergone growth in cargo traffic, especially
in 1994 (in 1993, 427 MT were handled), due to the selection of
the airport by some freight companies as the arrival point for
goods (perishables) for distribution and as the point of departure
for other types of goods (parcels). International cargo traffic
has grown exceedingly due to the opening of customs barriers with
the European Union.
During 2005, 91,594 passengers used the facilities, 11,579 flights
were operated and 39,711 tonnes of cargo were transported.
