Barcelona Airport
About Barcelona
Barcelona is surrounded by the Mediterranean to
its east, situated in Catalunya (Catalonia) in Northeast Spain.
It is blessed with a pleasant climate all year round, recently
it has emerged as a top European short break destination.
As well as countless Gothic and Art Noveau buildings
there are some excellent museums. But Barcelona also has much
more to offer. It is a considerable regional economic power, strategically
close to the French border and with a far stretching Mediterranean
coastline the Port de Barcelona is Spain’s most prosperous
port and a major Mediterranean destination. The centre of this
flourishing city is at Placa de Catalunya from where you can walk
along La Rambla southeast towards the port.
About Barcelona Airport
Barcelona Airport is south-west of the city of Barcelona,
between the city limits of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans and
Sant Boi. It is three km from the Port of Barcelona, one of the
most important ports in the Mediterranean for container traffic
and the leader in the cruise market. It is also located near the
Free Zone Consortium, one of the most important industrial and
logistics centres in Spain.
Barcelona Airport is the cornerstone of the Catalan economy and
is important for the business sector and tourism industry. To
modernise Barcelona Airport for future air traffic demands, major
improvements to infrastructure and services are currently being
conducted. The Barcelona Plan will change the airport with the
construction of a new terminal area and the extension of the airfield
with a new runway, in addition to other infrastructures.
These improvements to the airport will consolidate Barcelona
as a major European hub airport, increasing its domestic and international
connections.
Since the Olympic Games, passenger traffic at the Barcelona airport
has increased by over 100%, growing from 10 million passengers
in 1992 to over 27 million in 2004. During 2005, it handled 27,131,448
passengers, 307,798 flight operations and 90,239 tonnes of cargo.
