Almeria Airport
About Almeria
Almeria lies on the eastern edge of Andalucia. It
takes its name from its capital city which is on the southern
coast of the province. Film companies discovered that the area
offered ideal film sets for films such as Lawrence of Arabia and
Patton. Hundreds of westerns have also been produced in the local
hillsides.
Almeria has a rugged landscape and a shortage of fertile soil,
but has managed, with a good irrigation system, to become an important
growth area and it is well known for the quality of its oranges
and white grapes, most of which are exported from its port. The
province of Almeria may appear to be a barren desert-like landscape
but on close inspection you find it to be the Andalucian province
with the longest stretch of beaches. Empty beaches and tiny hidden
coves with clear water.
Almeria city is a pleasant and largely modern city and offers
a relaxing holiday destination and has a wealth of history. The
Phoenicans founded the town, Carthagnians, Romans and Moors all
occupied it before Ferdinand and Isabella finally recovered it
for Spain during the reconquest.
Almeria hosted the 2005 Mediterranean Games and the sporting
spirit prevails in the city. This is the perfect place to enjoy
water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and rowing.
About Almeria Airport
Almeria airport is located at the centre of the
bay of Almeria and eight kilometres from the city, it enjoys communications
with the province's other tourist destinations, such as Cabo de
Gata, Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido or Mojacar.
During 1990's, Almeria airport grew continuously and in 2000
it handled just under a million passengers. To adjust to these
demands, in 1995 the passenger terminal was remodelled and in
2002 the new cargo terminal came into operation.
During 2005, Almeria handled 1,073,585 passengers, 18,269 flight
operations and 52.6 tonnes of cargo.
