Munster Osnabruk Airport
About Munster Osnabruk Airport
History of Munster Osnabruk Airport
- 1968 The cities of Münster, Osnabrück and Greven
and the administrative districts of Münster, Steinfurt and
Tecklenburg formed the limited company "Flughafen Münster/Osnabrück
GmbH" for the construction of an airport in the greater Münster
/ Osnabrück area. After three years of construction the Munster
Osnabruk Airport and the 2,000 m long runway were completed.
- 1972 Münster Osnabrück Airport was opened officially
on 27 May. Cimber Air immediately provides the connection to the
international hub of Frankfurt. In the first year 25,000 passengers
take-off and land at Munster Osnabruk Airport.
- 1973 TUI and Neckermann discovered Munster Osnabruk Airport
for their holiday flights to the Mediterranean. On peak days 700
tourists fly from Munster Osnabruk Airport.
- 1975 A new tower is put into service. Air traffic control
and instrument landing systems make take-offs and landings safe
at international level. Now that Munster Osnabruk Airport is a recognized
customs airport, duty-free, freight import and export are no longer
a problem.
- 1976 The runway is extended by 170 m to a length of 2,170
m.
- 1978 Large jets start to arrive at Munster Osnabruk Airport:
a Jumbo jet and a Tristar.
- 1986 Münster/Osnabrück officially becomes an
international commercial airport, the twelveth in the Federal Republic.
- 1987 A supersonic Concorde lands at Munster Osnabruk Airport.
- 1988 Lufthansa opens its own station. The terminal building
is becoming too small: Conversion, planning of a new terminal. Air
freight business is increasing.
- 1989 Lufthansa includes Münster/Osnabrück as
the 10th commercial airport into its night air mail network. The
Government takes over the air traffic control at Munster Osnabruk
Airport.
- 1990 The new tower begins service. A hangar is converted
to an arrivals lounge: Munster Osnabruk Airport records a two-digit
passenger increase. Air freight turnover trebles.
- 1991 Air freight business continues to boom: a 1,200m2
cargo building is taken into service. Two instrument landing systems
make air traffic independent of most weather conditions.
- 1992 With a 40% rate of increase Munster Osnabruk Airport
celebrates its anniversary. In the summer 25 holiday jets are added
to the 150 scheduled flights per week. Air Berlin stations a holiday
plane at Munster Osnabruk Airport. Large building site: Extension
of the terminal building at a price of DM 2.0 million. The Federal
government and the Land subsidize the construction of the new terminal
with DM 65 million.
- 1993 Construction of the new terminal starts. On 25 October
the 500,000th passenger lands. The annual balance shows 600,000
passengers and thus an increase by more than one third.
- 1994 Holiday flights reach new dimensions. Proud annual
balance: 725,000 passengers.
- 1995 As planned, the new terminal is taken into service
on 23 March.
- 1996 The first multi-storey car park which is combined
with an airport center opens its doors. 1,100 parking spaces. The
number of passengers at Munster Osnabruk Airport exceeds the million-mark.
- 1997 In the west building the technical facilities of Munster
Osnabruk Airport are concentrated and the new central traffic office
is located here. The project-determination procedure for an extension
of the runway to 3,600 metres for intercontinental flights enters
into its decisive phase.
- 1998 With 1.3 million passengers and a growth of 15.5%
Munster Osnabruk Airport leads the growth rates of all international
airports in Germany.
- 1999 For the first time Münster/Osnabrück Airport
is in the black and produces a surplus of over DM 7 million in the
first year of profit.
- 2000 The year of construction: Capacities of the international
airport will be trebled in future. Construction of the second terminal
which is to be taken into service in May 2001 is in full swing.
A second multi-story car park combined with an Airport Center is
opened.
