History of Munster Osnabruk Airport

  • 1968 The cities of Münster, Osnabrück and Greven and the administrative districts of Münster, Steinfurt and Tecklenburg formed the limited company "Flughafen Münster/Osnabrück GmbH" for the construction of an airport in the greater Münster / Osnabrück area. After three years of construction the Munster Osnabruk Airport and the 2,000 m long runway were completed.
  • 1972 Münster Osnabrück Airport was opened officially on 27 May. Cimber Air immediately provides the connection to the international hub of Frankfurt. In the first year 25,000 passengers take-off and land at Munster Osnabruk Airport.
  • 1973 TUI and Neckermann discovered Munster Osnabruk Airport for their holiday flights to the Mediterranean. On peak days 700 tourists fly from Munster Osnabruk Airport.
  • 1975 A new tower is put into service. Air traffic control and instrument landing systems make take-offs and landings safe at international level. Now that Munster Osnabruk Airport is a recognized customs airport, duty-free, freight import and export are no longer a problem.
  • 1976 The runway is extended by 170 m to a length of 2,170 m.
  • 1978 Large jets start to arrive at Munster Osnabruk Airport: a Jumbo jet and a Tristar.
  • 1986 Münster/Osnabrück officially becomes an international commercial airport, the twelveth in the Federal Republic.
  • 1987 A supersonic Concorde lands at Munster Osnabruk Airport.
  • 1988 Lufthansa opens its own station. The terminal building is becoming too small: Conversion, planning of a new terminal. Air freight business is increasing.
  • 1989 Lufthansa includes Münster/Osnabrück as the 10th commercial airport into its night air mail network. The Government takes over the air traffic control at Munster Osnabruk Airport.
  • 1990 The new tower begins service. A hangar is converted to an arrivals lounge: Munster Osnabruk Airport records a two-digit passenger increase. Air freight turnover trebles.
  • 1991 Air freight business continues to boom: a 1,200m2 cargo building is taken into service. Two instrument landing systems make air traffic independent of most weather conditions.
  • 1992 With a 40% rate of increase Munster Osnabruk Airport celebrates its anniversary. In the summer 25 holiday jets are added to the 150 scheduled flights per week. Air Berlin stations a holiday plane at Munster Osnabruk Airport. Large building site: Extension of the terminal building at a price of DM 2.0 million. The Federal government and the Land subsidize the construction of the new terminal with DM 65 million.
  • 1993 Construction of the new terminal starts. On 25 October the 500,000th passenger lands. The annual balance shows 600,000 passengers and thus an increase by more than one third.
  • 1994 Holiday flights reach new dimensions. Proud annual balance: 725,000 passengers.
  • 1995 As planned, the new terminal is taken into service on 23 March.
  • 1996 The first multi-storey car park which is combined with an airport center opens its doors. 1,100 parking spaces. The number of passengers at Munster Osnabruk Airport exceeds the million-mark.
  • 1997 In the west building the technical facilities of Munster Osnabruk Airport are concentrated and the new central traffic office is located here. The project-determination procedure for an extension of the runway to 3,600 metres for intercontinental flights enters into its decisive phase.
  • 1998 With 1.3 million passengers and a growth of 15.5% Munster Osnabruk Airport leads the growth rates of all international airports in Germany.
  • 1999 For the first time Münster/Osnabrück Airport is in the black and produces a surplus of over DM 7 million in the first year of profit.
  • 2000 The year of construction: Capacities of the international airport will be trebled in future. Construction of the second terminal which is to be taken into service in May 2001 is in full swing. A second multi-story car park combined with an Airport Center is opened.
