Dortmund Airport
About Dortmund Airport
It is hard to say when aeroplanes first started to land
at Dortmund Airport, although it is safe to say it was before the First
World War. After the war, Dortmund Airport was used in the network of
post office flights. In 1924 negotiations began to integrate Dortmund
Airport into the international route network of the air transport companies.
In spring, 1925, the founders meeting takes place, and soon after the
city of Dortmund is unable to shoulder the burden of the airport on
its own. Dortmund aviation history begins on 16 April, 1926 with the
establishment of the airport Dortmund GmbH.
- 1927 - Already, Dortmund Airport registers over 4,000 take-offs
and landings, of which nearly 3,000 are regular transport services.
- 1930 - The airship "Count Zepplin" lands in Dortmund,
to an audience of 120,000.
- 1937 - Summer destinations include Berlin, Dresden and
Nuerenberg, and further afield, Paris Rome and Stockholm.
- 1939 - With the beginnng of the Second World War, civilian
air traffic is stopped, and the military take over Dortmund Airport.
- 1945 - The last military planes leave in March, and in
April the allied tanks stand on the destroyed airfield. The RAF
take over the airport, and forbid any German air traffic.
- 1955 - The Federal Republic receives back the sovereignty
of the air. Dortmund is no longer part of the network of airports,
as larger postwar aircraft need longer runways to land and take-off.
- 1960 - Due to the stationing of British rockets in Dortmud,
a new location for civilian aviation is sought. A new air field,
where today's airport is located, was located, and in 1960 the first
leisure aircraft landed there.
- 1969 - The city of Dortmund gives the go-ahead to develop
the working airport into a commercial venture.
- 1971 - Dormund Airport once more becomes active in the
network of freight operators.
- 1975 - The first passenger service between Dortmund and
Munich is established.
- 1987 - Developments in the terminal building and extension
of the runway are approved. The proposed runway will be over 2000
metres, allowing commercial aircraft to land.
- 2000 - October 2000 sees the completion of a new terminal.
- 2001 - Dortmund Airport exceeds one million passengers.
