Pau Airport
About Pau
The Pyrénées tumble to an end into
the Bay of Biscay. The Côte Basque stretches for 30 km with
its sandy coves which attracted the wealthy in the 19th century.
The Basques here lack the political sting of their
Spanish relatives, but they are clearly Basque not French, with
their own language, culture and cuisine.
Pau is the capital of Béarn, an important
centre and famous for its château begun in the 12th century.
Pau had the first golf courses on the Continent. Rugby was also
introduced here by the English who favoured the resort of Pau
ever since Wellington's troops stopped on their way back from
Spain. The Musée des Beaux Arts has works by Degas and
Rubens.
