Orleans Airport
About Orleans
Orléans is perhaps most famous for its association
with Joan of Arc, celebrated prominently but not exclusively in
the Sainte Croix cathedral. Joan of Arc returned to Orleans after
her victory over the English. Orleans has some fine architecture
with Rue de Bourgogne a favourite for diners and Place du Martroi
good for cafés. The Musée des Beaux Arts has a good
collection of 17th and 18th portraits from the French school as
well as more modern works by Renoir and Picasso among others.
With so many beautiful small towns along the Loire it is not surprising
Orleans is often chosen as a base by tourists.
South of Orléans on the N20 is the classic
17th century château La Ferté Saint Aubin. Head west
for Meung sur Loire where the château's origins date from
the 11th century. Pointed turrets and steep rooflines clearly
support the claim that this is one of the finest examples of 13th
century military architecture complete with secret underground
passages. During the Hundred Years' War this was an English base,
besieged by the Maid of Orléans and the final resting place
of Lord Salisbury, the commander of the English troops.
