About Nimes
Separated from the more up-market Côte dAzur
by the salt marshes of the Petite Camargue, Gard has one of the
greatest surviving pieces of Roman heritage - the sweeping 2,000
year old Roman Pont du Gard, a stunning three tiered bridge topped
by an aqueduct.
The Roman theme reaches its pinacle in the city
of Nîmes. All the roads in Nimes seem to lead to the two
storey Roman arena, known as Les Arènes. This imposing
edifice seats 20,000 spectators and is the premier site for bull
fighting outside Spain. The venue is also used for concerts.
Boulevard Victor Hugo - one of the streets encircling
the old town - leads down from the arena to the Maison Carrée,
an elegant Roman temple with finely fluted columns and a sculpted
frieze. The Musée Archéologique charts Nimes' development
from Iron Age to the end of the Roman period.
The old town has plenty of squares such as Place
de la Maison-Carrée and Place du Marché, all with
classic cafés. The Jardin de la Fontaine in the north west
of Nimes with the temple of Diana, is a soothing network of formal
gardens, pools, stone terraces, fountains and the green and shady
Canal de la Fontaine.
In the last 10 years modern architects have brought
fashionable touches to the city with a new arts complex. What
springs to many people's minds about the town is denim - literally
de Nîmes - the material first manufactured here and exported
to the USA in the 19th century.
