North of Lyon is a large area of rolling hills and valleys where the world famous wine Beaujolais, is produced. Each year on the third Thursday of November after the harvest, celebrations throughout the region welcome in the new vintage.

Lyon is a World Heritage Site, famous for the gastronomy of its local bistros or bouchons. Lyon's pedestrianised town centre and the Part-Dieu district also make Lyon an excellent place to shop.

Specialities from the region include pork sausages, gratons (strips of pork crackling) and salade Lyonnaise (lettuce, bacon, croutons, poached eggs). Sweeter delicacies include coussin de Lyon (praline cream with a green almond paste).
