About Lille
The département of Nord has been an important crossroads
in northern Europe for centuries. Largely overlooked by British holidaymakers,
the Nord is mostly unspoilt and can truly claim to be la France
profonde. Sandy beaches around Dunkerque give way to the hills,
valleys and forests of Avesnois, Hainaut and Flanders where rural life
appears unhurried to the modern world. In the heart of the département,
Frances fourth largest metropolis Lille is a cosmopolitan mix
of old and new. A mainline railway interchange, specifically for Eurostar,
has brought new visitors to the city which, among other things, houses
the second most important fine art museum in France after the Louvre.
Lilles ambitious programme of restoring the old
town has paid handsome dividends. Chic shops replace the once boarded
up doorways, intricate 17th and 18th century facades have been restored
and the narrow streets are as vibrant as ever. An ideal introduction
to the city, the Grand Place still serves as the main meeting point
for the million-strong Lillois. Nearby, the 17th century Flemish Renaissance
style Vieille Bourse (literally the old stock exchange) is now home
to second-hand booksellers and the bustling, all year round flower market.
The pedestrianised streets of Rue Neuve, Rue de Béthune and Rue
du Sec Arembault are worth a stroll and for the serious shopping centre
lover there is the modern Euralille.
