Picturesque villages with a decidedly German character hug the Haut-Rhin region on the left bank of the Rhine. Turckheim and Beblenheim are renowned for their white wines.

Colmar, the département’s attractive centrepiece with cobbled streets and characteristic half-timbered houses, is home to the region’s treasure, the Issenheim altarpiece, an ornate medieval panel painting.

Colmar also makes an ideal base to explore the Route du Vin and hosts the annual Foire des Vins festival in August.
