SILKAIR - THE REGIONAL WING OF SINGAPORE AIRLINES
Tradewinds Pte Ltd was formed in 1975 as the tours and travel
arm of Singapore Airlines. Its function then involved the development
and wholesaling of holiday tours. By 1980, Tradewinds had established
itself as Singapore's premier tour wholesaler marketing holiday
packages. From tours, the company branched out into air charters,
and it soon became apparent that Tradewinds had outgrown its initial
purpose.
In 1989, Tradewinds the Airline was born. When the airline first
took to the skies, its focus was on serving an exotic array of
holiday destinations around the region such as Pattaya, Phuket,
Hatyai, Kuantan and Tioman. As the carrier matured, regional business
destinations such as Jakarta, Phnom Penh and Yangon were added
to its network, thereby broadening the airline's appeal beyond
the holiday maker to include the business traveller.
In 1992, the carrier was re-named SILKAIR, representing its evolution
from a holiday resort airline to one which caters to both business
and leisure passengers. The company's Tours & Travel Division
was restructured into a wholly-owned subsidiary of SILKAIR, and
retained the name Tradewinds Tours & Travel Pte. Ltd.
