The company was formed in 2001 with substantial funding, and commenced scheduled services on 01 December 2001. The airline was created to link the AFRICAN continent, with regional, and Long haul routes, that are designed to connect AFRICA to Europe, Middle East, and Asia.

AFRIQIYAH is Arabic for AFRICAN, their modern ALL jet fleet are painted in striking colours of RED, GREEN, YELLOW, & BLACK reflecting the colours of AFRICA.

AFRIQIYAH AIRWAYS are members of the International Air Transport Association, and as such the company follows all international standards, relating to operations, maintenance, and safety.
